The word is a shortened version of weblog, which indicates its origin as a set of diary entries or related content posted on the Internet for a variety of reasons, mostly of a personal nature. The chance for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is a novel feature of the blog compared to normal journalism. The influence of blogs is much disputed, since few have any large audience of their own, but they represent a significant opening of public access and a challenge to institutional control of public information.
